22-28 Underwood Road

Thirty three new social and shared ownership homes have been created for Peabody at Underwood Road in Whitechapel, London. The project is arranged on a tight urban site as a five storey building addressing the street with three courtyard houses to the rear.

The street facade is articulated with different brick types, bonds and window arrangements. The staircases are handled as a separate volume forming a zone of defensible space defining entrances. This is inscribed with a continuous band of lettering describing the history of the site as a Jewish Maternity Hospital. Ground floor maisonettes have their own entrances directly from the street entered over bridge elements allowing light to basement bedrooms below.

Flats on upper floors all face south and enjoy deep balconies formed from a steel framework lined with vertical heat treated timbers creating a lightweight counterpoint to the mass of the brickwork volumes. The timbers rise from raised terraces on the ground floor to the top of the building where they terminate as horizontal brise soleil shading. The higher windows, balconies and a communal roof terrace enjoy fantastic views towards the City of London skyline.
